5 ways to save money and help the planet 🌍

3 min read

Did you know that, the more paper you use, the more you contribute to deforestation – which is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all cars, planes and ships worldwide?

And that quick online shopping spree? It impacts our planet too. The packaging, the shipping - it all adds up.

Everything we use in our daily lives, from the food we eat to the heating system in our homes, releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The amount of carbon dioxide each person, community, organisation or product releases, is called a carbon footprint.

In the UK alone, the average carbon footprint is around 10 tonnes of CO2 per person, per year.

Yikes! Not good.

But, we can all make a difference by living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

At Gusto, we believe in the power of small actions that collectively make a big impact on the environment. By making conscious choices in our daily lives, we can contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Eat more fruit and veg, less meat and dairy

Not only does it benefit your health, but it also reduces the carbon emissions associated with livestock farming. By doing this every day, you can reduce your carbon footprint by over 1 tonne every year! Make sure you choose organic, local food that’s in season, and reduce your food waste by planning meals ahead of time, freezing and reusing leftovers, and indulging in sustainable snacks like our guilt-free apple crisps!

2. Drive less

Consider alternatives to driving alone, such as walking, cycling, carpooling, or using public transport. If driving is unavoidable, do it in style by opting for electric or hybrid cars. Practice efficient driving habits, avoid unnecessary acceleration, and use navigation apps to steer clear of traffic jams, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

3.Save energy at home

Switch to LED light bulbs–yes, they’re more expensive but they consume less energy and last longer! Unplug electrical appliances and devices when you’re not using them, and use the cold water cycle when washing your clothes. These small adjustments add up over time and contribute to a greener lifestyle. Not to mention, you’ll save so much on your electricity bills!

4. Stop buying water in plastic bottles

Single-use plastic is a major environmental concern. Say goodbye to plastic water bottles and invest in a reusable water bottle. Not only does this save you money, but it also helps reduce the massive amount of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans and landfills. As a bonus, your stylish water bottle will make a statement while promoting sustainability!

5. Avoid unnecessary shopping

Whenever possible, opt for used or recycled items and bring your own reusable shopping bags to the grocery store. Most importantly, avoid fast fashion; instead, choose quality, timeless pieces that have a longer lifespan and lower environmental impact. Trendy, cheap clothing that quickly goes out of style accounts for 10% of global pollution!

Every choice we make in our daily lives has an environmental consequence. By adopting eco-friendly practices, we can collectively make a positive impact on reducing our carbon footprint. At Gusto, we're committed to promoting sustainability, and we encourage you to join us on this journey towards a greener and more environmentally conscious future. Together, let's make choices that benefit both us and the planet we call home.
